With the following:

The PRAM battery is a lithium type, it does not need charging. When you said
the iMac does not start, do you mean there is no chime, no power LED on even
for a moment, i.e. completely dead?-Steve Bell

Answer: The chime doesn't sound, but I hear other whirring of startup (fan,
hard drive, CD-Rom?) and the power LED goes on Yellow-Tan, rather than
green. At the same time I hear a single sound, as if the monitor is being
hit with a charge, but it fails to illuminate. Subsequently, to turn it off,
the keyboard start button does nothing; only the CPU start button
(illuminated) turns it off.

And, again, every once in a while, the machine starts up and runs normally.
Then, there may be a gap of days or weeks until the next time I touch the
keyboard start button, and the machine springs back into life.

Any further ideas, dear friends?
