I think the key to getting a 256 to work is that it be of the correct bit density. Apple lists it as x64. Many newer 256 chips are x8. Also, at least in my findings, I found that some bondi iMacs (at least Rev A's) have metal retaining clips for the chips. Those clips can touch the memory chips on the 256 card and cause it to short out. Make sure if yours has metal clips that you don't let them touch the pins on the memory card.
