Last night as I was switching programs my iMac suddenly froze, went grey and displayed this message on screen: "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." Also, at the bottom it listed my Ethernet number and IP address. I had to unplug my computer to get it to go off. I left it off all night and now it seems to be fine.
Sounds like a Kernel Panic -- look here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227
Is this a warning of something to fix or more problems to come?
Hard to say, at this point. What OS X version? KPs are more common in Jag than in Panther. If it doesn't happen again, I wouldn't worry about it. (But you should run Disk First Aid -- always -- after a forced shut-down.) If it happens again soon, that's more serious and it would be a call for further investigation thru logs, hardware compatibility, etc.
