What version of Mac Os are you running? I've had similar things happen running Mac OS 9.1, but it tends to be once in a blue moon, unlike Jokedows 95/98/ME/2000/XP (don't believe the XP hype as I've had XP Pro crash 25 times in the last 4 months when doing bugger all except edit documents). When my iMac froze (did it last night) I also had to whip the power cord out of the back and wait about 10 seconds before reinserting it, and it fired up fine. Like Jokedows, all pre Mac OS X versions integrate the desktop with the underlying operating system kernel, so if the desktop hangs/crashes, it often takes down the OS kernel with it! With Mac OS X (and Linux/Unix) you can crash the desktop (only ever happened with Mandrake Linux), but the underlying OS kernel will be fine. Simply restart your X server and off you go, unlike a certain OS that currently dominates the PC market and is ultimately a rip off of Mac OS! Pete
