The 2Wire is a modem/router -- the trick was to figure out how to access the ports. Turns out I just had to type in http://homeportal/ in a browser and it loaded up the preference pages.
I set my ports to DMZ and finally got up and running!
I fixed my dynamic IP/numbers as address problems by going to dyndns.org where I found the linked software and registered a new URL, configuring to stay pointed at my server even if the numbers change. Worked like a charm. I'm now serving .mp3s etc. from a 5-year-old iMac -- amazing.
This computer keeps on paying for itself with outstanding added value each year. I don't know any PC users who are still happy with 1999-era hardware!
I'm serving via http://dimmwitness.gotdns.com -- for free. Amazing.

Do you have a router in between the DSL modem and the computers? Is it using NAT? If so, you're IP address is only valid on your home network. If you want it to have a public IP address, you will need to get a second IP address from PacBell. Or, depending on your router, you may be able to configure a port so that it forwards to your server.
