Thanks, yeah, I figured it out...
The 2Wire is a modem/router -- the trick was to figure out how to access the ports. Turns out I just had to type in http://homeportal/ in a browser and it loaded up the preference pages.
I set my ports to DMZ and finally got up and running!
Work out how to open port 80 on the and forward requests to your iMac. Don't leave your network DMZ as this leaves your network wide open to hackers. This is especially a problem if you use Windows anywhere. If that is the case shut the ports *immedeatley* and find out how to set a single port up instead.
I fixed my dynamic IP/numbers as address problems by going to dyndns.org where I found the linked software and registered a new URL, configuring to stay pointed at my server even if the numbers change. Worked like a charm. I'm now serving .mp3s etc. from a 5-year-old iMac -- amazing.
I used to mirror one of my sites on a Mac LC 475 in a desk drawer running MacHTTP :).
This computer keeps on paying for itself with outstanding added value each year. I don't know any PC users who are still happy with 1999-era hardware!
1999 era PCs running Linux also make pretty good web servers. Most are PII266-400 or PIII300-450 speed machines. Only when you get into the leagues of running SQL and PHP do you run into a problem with lack of guts, and it'll probably be nearly as bad on a G3 Mac.
I'm serving via http://dimmwitness.gotdns.com -- for free. Amazing.
Thanks for your reply -- I stayed up past 3 and muddled through myself in this case. This forum is beginning to prove pretty useful!
Been here ever since I got my G4 iMac. Also been on LEM Lists since late 2000. When the going's good it's a great resource.
