From: Sherry Landry <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: VLC for OS 9.2
I miss my NPR and other talk programs. The OSX won't work. I like to use QuickTime or Real Music for these. I buddy told me of a parent file to use, but I lost it. Please help me out.
Hmmm. Where to start.
Let's start with the title: there is no VLC for 9.2.
I interpret "I miss my NPR and other talk programs. The OSX won't work." to mean "I want to listen to NPR and other stations but can't figure out how to do so in OS X."
If that's the case, then I would suggest downloading RealOne (free) for OS X and Windows Media Player 9 (free) for OS X. Between those two and iTunes, you'll have EVERYTHING you need to listen to streaming audio on the web.
For most radio stations or networks, simply visit their home page and click on the "listen live!" button. If you have RealOne and WiMP and iTunes installed, one of them will automatically pop up and begin streaming the sound. I have found that it REALLY helps to use the "favorites" feature on these players to save the trouble of going back to the web page each time. I've also found that for the best sound consistency/quality, a broadband connection is a must. Before you ask (everyone does), no there is no ONE player that handles all the different formats. Sorry. There *is* a way to *record* all the different formats, though, and it's free too: Wiretap, from Ambrosia (http://www.ambrosiasw.com). The recordings up a lot of disk space but it works great and the files can be converted to MP3 to save space.
In addition to "known" radio stations, like NPR, you can find a lot of alternatives out there, including http://www.airamericaradio.com (uses RealOne), http://www.shoutcast.com (uses iTunes) and http://www.live365.com (uses iTunes or its own player), the BBC (RealOne) and MANY other options. I think the Quicktime page at apple.com even has (buried in there somewhere!) a list of Quicktime radio options.

"This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation and we're going to ruin people's lives over it and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are going to really hammer them because they had a good time. You know, these people are being fired at every day. I'm talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You ever heard of need to blow some steam off?" -- Rush Limbaugh on the torture, murder, sodomising and rape of prisoners at Abu Ghaid prison.
