I have a dying iMac DV SE (400 MHz Graphite). I'm rather under the
impression the problem is the typical PAV board (spontaneously turns
itself off). I don't much feel like replacing the board, nor dealing with
an ATX hack. What I want to do is simply disconnect the PAV board and use
an external monitor via the VGA out port.

I opened it, and disconnected the internal video cable, but when that
cable is disconnected, the iMac won't turn on at all. If I reconnect the
cable, it powers on just fine.

I've looked for ATX hack directions specific to the iMac DV series, and
I've only found one site (lots of links to that same site, but everything
points to the same place in the end). It doesn't seem to indicate that
you HAVE to do anything with the internal video cable. Although, the site
does mention that the video using just the external VGA output was
fuzzy... but that is more then I get. The site seems to indicate that the
iMac powered just fine without the internal cable connected.

So is there something else I have to disconnect in conjunction with the
internal video cable? What is going wrong that prevents the iMac from
powering on with that cable disconnected?

Has anyone else been thru this that can give me a few pointers?

TIA
