I am posting this out of necessity for my father-in-law.

My father-in-law, a lovely gentleman for whom I have the utmost
respect , bought his iMac at about the same time as I did
(October/November 1999). Since my iMac order went in first, I ended
up with a Revision "D" and a tray-loading CD -ROM with an OS of 8.6.
I'm very happy with it and have had very little problems these past 5 years.
I am in no rush to update. I'm about two years away from replacing my iMac,
so I can wait.

My father-in-law's order came a few weeks after mine. He ended up with a
slot-loading CD-Rom and at the time, the brand new OS 9. Because he
only uses his computer for e-mailing and internet surfing, and
because he is such a novice, he was afraid to update the OS 9 to
its most recent version. So he presently has OS 9.0

This is where I think his problems lies. Apparently every time
he logs on to the internet, whichever site he goes to, he gets a "Security
Notice"window telling him the site is not secure. This is EVERY site he's
going to.

When I go to the same sites with my OS 8.6, I'm getting a security notice
window telling me that I am entering a page which IS secure.

We are both using what I believe to be the latest version of Internet
Explorer for Macs (5.1.7).

I tried having him go to his Preferences in Internet Explorer and click on
Security. He has the same settings as I do. We even tried "reset to
default", but that doesn't seem to help. All of his settings in his
Preferences in Internet Explorer are the same as mine, yet I get a "Secured"
window certificate, while he gets "unsecured"

I believe the issue lies with the Operating System and I think updating to
the most recent version of OS 9 would fix the problem. Does that sound
plausible? Is there more information that you might need to diagnose the
problem?
