Does anyone know if an iPod with the USB cable can be used with an early iMac (in a USB 1 port)?
No, this will not work.
You will need to add a FW port to your existing iMac (doable thanks to Sonnet -- see the thread on the HARMONi upgrade), or buy a Mac that has FW already on it (such models probably start around $250US). I suggest you save up and get a refurb'd eMac for around $600 or so ... they are great machines, a big step up from where you are, able to run all the new toys easily, for not a lot of money.
