Listers,
I'm trying to help someone with a Flat Panel iMac. The cause of
the crisis, such as it is, was a delete operation in Quicken. They tried to
delete an item and wound up losing a goodly portion of their check register
in one bank account. I don't use/know Quicken and I don't know my way around
OS X well at all and could not find the lost item. What I did find was a G4
Flat Panel running OS 10.1.5 with 128 mgs of ram, and the entire contents of
an old Performa's hard drive splashed around on the new drive. It's a bit of
a mess. But everybody makes their own mess, and can generally live in it if
they've made it . . .but this owner had "help" in setting up the new
computer and "saving" things from the old Performa.
It is my suggestion that she add ram, at least 256mgs and move
on to Panther. Question: is the ram installation a big deal? I looked at
MacTracker and the deal about one factory installed stick and one user
installable stick is new to me. She is on a dsl line, question: will Panther
pick it up and just pop online like a Winderbox XP? Question: how tuff and
how to export her address book from whatever E-mail client she is now using?
Question: is there a way around all that user profile/admin crap? I don't
get the need to have a volume (or whatever it is) in addition to the HD. If
I'm on the wrong road here, please enlighten me.
The machine is noticeably slow now, and I expect Panther and Ram
to remedy this . . .am I right? TIA.
