There are two options. 1: Run OS 9 via Classic in OS X, that is the
"common" way of doing, and the only way of doing it on any of the recent
Macs. This will work for 90% of the OS 9 (or previous) applications.
However, there are some things, particularly apps that interface with
hardware (like scanner apps), that won't work this way.
This is less true than it used to be. When Classic first came out, the golden rule was that almost everything worked except for any app that accessed hardware (like scanning apps, faxing apps and so on). Somewhere during the "Jaguar" development cycle, however, this changed: I scan from my UMAX scanner in Photoshop 4 all the time, using the plug-in that works with that old app (no plugin was ever developed by UMAX for OS X, and thus they get no more money from me, ever). ISTR that faxing suddenly worked too, though of course faxing is now ubiquitous under OS X 10.3.x so I don't bother.
