Dan,
My sons each have a PC. I have an iMac, but I had a Centris before it. We had dial-up for seven years (until last week, when we got DSL). The way I connected all three computers to dial-up internet was by buying one of those little adapters (from Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, the grocery store...) that lets you connect TWO phones to ONE phone jack. In my case, I bought the adapter that lets you connect THREE phones to ONE phone jack. Then, we each plugged our respective computers into that adapter. The only thing we had to do was make sure one of the other computers wasn't on line. There is no external hardware or internal reprogramming necessary for this arrangement, other than that little 99 cent adapter. There is also no chain, since all three of us plugged directly to the adapter.
Now that we're on DSL, we've done basically the same thing. The DSL provider offered a free modem/router as part of the installation package. It lines in to my son's TRENDnet switch (which he already had for LAN party purposes), and then our three computers connect to the switch. This was not a work-around; in fact, the guy installing the DSL worked with my sons to make sure all three computers were able to get on-line before he left.

Claire,
Thank you for responding. That is a good idea and I'm glad that you shared it. I never thought of so simple solution. What I'm after is the ability that a router gives you, enabling whatever amount of machines you hook up to it, to go on line simultaneously. I don't know if that's possible with the router that I have and the existing internal dial up in the iMacs. But your method will at least make it possible to take turns going on line. Hopefully my grands will be moving into a house soon where they'll get either DSL or cable like me.
