Having come from the 'dark-side' in 2001 to the Mac platform, I do know that PC's have had internet connection sharing built in since Windows 98. That applies to dial-up as well as DSL and cable. Your Mac, if it's running OS X also has this ability. All this is needed is a hub/switch. The computer that is doing the connection sharing acts as a DHCP server and will assign IP addresses to the computers that it is sharing with so that everybody is happy and can be online at the same time. The only drawback is that a shared dial-up connection will be S L O W at best.
I do admire your ingenuity with the phone line splitter though. But, when I was reading your post, I could not but think of some of the problems that could be encountered.
