I have an Asante wireless router, running my cable modem to my eMac and wireless to my daughter's PeeCee and to my IBM laptop. My cable company told me the same thing until I pressed them... it seems that they only charge the extra money if THEY install and maintain the wireless network. Other than that, you only need them to get the MAC address for the cable modem (which I assume they provided to you). My network works like a charm, and I can even access it out in my garage!

BTW, the PeeCee has a Belkin wireless G PCI card, and the IBM Thinkpad has an Asante PCMCIA card. Talk about a weird mix! Bought the whole works on eBay (from different sources) for less than $80.

I have a Dlink wireless router hooked up to the cable modem, running my
iBook with Airport card, a Windoze box (my son's, for gaming) with a Dlink
wireless card, and a 400 DV iMac connected through the ethernet to the
router. Works flawlessly and it's none of the cable company's business.
Some iMacs can act as a base station for another Mac with an Airport card,
but I don't know if that's true of your flat panel.

we just got a new ibook! Our flat screen imac is connected directly to
the cable modem. My friend (in another state) told me that all we need
to do is purchase a wireless modem (she bought net gear) to plug into
the cable modem - and then get an airport/airport extreme card for the
ibook. THe ibook would then be able to share the cable modem with the
imac.
Is this setup possible with all cable modem companies?
When I last checked, my cable modem company states that they charge
extra $ per month for 2 machines to be using cable modem. So - is
there something unique about connecting wireless - that you can share
the cable modem?
Any help welcome -before I call the cable company and end of spending
more $.
