Here's a new topic to clear the air:
I have an external 120 GB FireWire AcomData hard drive, partitioned 6 ways. Anyway, I used two of the partitions last fall to back up the contents of my iMac when it was only 9.2.2 (a working copy and a backup). I have a third partition backing up the few things I did in Jaguar. Last December, I did a nuke-and-pave reinstall of 9.2.2 and then added Panther on my iMac but have not yet created a backup of it onto the external drive. (I know, yikes!) Should I use Carbon Copy Cloner (is that what it's called) and back up my entire iMac hard drive, or should I actually LOAD Panther onto one of the partitions of the external drive first? I actually like to have two copies of a backup, so that if I mess up backing up over one of the partitions, I still have my last backup on another partition. That may not make sense, but it's the way I've chosen to do it since I bought the external drive a few years ago. (I got the idea from a company that backed up onto tape every night, each night alternating between two tapes.)
<snip> Thanks in advance for your help, Claire
Carbon Copy Cloner is worth every penny you're willing to donate. I would clone your drive over to one of the partitions (two if you want redundancy). That way you get all of your preferences, settings, etc copied over correctly, rather than trying to keep a separate clean installation up to date.
