Here's a new topic to clear the air:
I have an external 120 GB FireWire AcomData hard drive, partitioned 6 ways. Anyway, I used two of the partitions last fall to back up the contents of my iMac when it was only 9.2.2 (a working copy and a backup). I have a third partition backing up the few things I did in Jaguar. Last December, I did a nuke-and-pave reinstall of 9.2.2 and then added Panther on my iMac but have not yet created a backup of it onto the external drive. (I know, yikes!) Should I use Carbon Copy Cloner (is that what it's called) and back up my entire iMac hard drive, or should I actually LOAD Panther onto one of the partitions of the external drive first? I actually like to have two copies of a backup, so that if I mess up backing up over one of the partitions, I still have my last backup on another partition. That may not make sense, but it's the way I've chosen to do it since I bought the external drive a few years ago. (I got the idea from a company that backed up onto tape every night, each night alternating between two tapes.)
While I could stumble through this myself, I'd rather find out how I should really do this. I know that after backing up 9.2.2 before nuke-and-pave, I have not been able to access everything that I backed up. I seem to have to reinstall everything. For instance, when I wanted to open a PageMaker document on the external drive, it first reinstalled PageMaker. I thought that when I backed up my iMac with 9.2.2, it was literally making a copy of the internal drive onto the external drive. After the WWDC, I plan to get a Powerbook, and then possibly return this iMac to its 9.2.2 status, with each computer being backed up on the external drive. Trying to use PageMaker, etc., in classic, with the printer drivers being different for 9.2.2 and for Panther, has been a hassle for me. My scanner no longer works in X.
Thanks in advance for your help, Claire
