I have a 333mHz iMac running 10.2.8 and my wife has a newer eMac running 10.3.4.
My question is the Cashes folder. On my iMac under System-Library-Cashes it is 7.3MB and on my wife's eMac it is 149.1MB.
Under User-Library-Cashes My iMac is 26.2MB and the eMac is 71.8MB.
Is this a problem? Can the cashes be deleted? Should these files be emptied occasionally
Is it a problem? Only if you're running short of HD space. Can the caches be deleted? Yes. Should they occasionally? Sure.
I'd recommend OnyX (freeware) to handle this and a handful of other routine OS X maintainance chores. Just read the instructions and use the "cleaning" and "maintain" functions (I wish they'd restore the "auto pilot" type function!).
Another question concerns the finder in Panther. My wife has an alias that doesn't point to anything in the sidebar of her finder window. How do I delete the alias?
Same way you would remove such a thing from the Dock -- drag it outside the sidebar window, and poof!

There is only ONE WAY to get through the hype for and against the new film "Farenheit 9/11" -- see it for yourself and make up your own mind. Everybody else, please shut up.
