Finally got through to Paypal tech support, who told me that Paypal is supposedly phasing out all support for the Mac side of things (!) and meantime has discontinued support for IE 5. Supposed reason: security. (I leave it to those with more technical knowledge than I have to judge whether they have any legit grounds for saying that Macs in either 9 or X and our browsers are less secure than Windows boxes, but I feel a bit dubious.)
That IS dumb...I guess us Mac users money isn't as good as Winders users! Hmmmm!
The tech said I must use Netscape, which does not work at all on eBay for me or some of my customers, at least in OS 9/4.79 (trying to access the eBay site at all in 4.79 crashes the computer) and I have not had time to download Netscape 7. So now in order to use eBay and then Paypal I am switching browsers midstream, from iCab to Netscape, pasting in the URL from the payment page. Arrggh.
No, Netscape 4.79 DOES NOT work any longer on ebay. One day it did, the next it crashed, burned, exploded, etc. like you have seen. I use Netscape 7 on OS 9.2.2 and it DOES work fine. I didn't have the problems that all the Windows people were having several months ago not being able to see pictures, etc. Try and download it and use the tabbed browsing...really cool feature! One page, MANY tabs! :o) I can get through paypal, listing and buying on ebay without a problem (for now, until they break/fix something else!).
Mentioned to the Paypal tech support person that it would be nice if, when they abruptly made the site not work with certain browsers, and are planning on making the whole site Mac unusable in the future, that they might see fit to mention these facts somewhere on their site. He said he'd pass that suggestion on to the proper department. I'm not holding my breath.
Yeah, we could dream that they might tell ANY of us when they change something! HA!
