preferences changing - permissions?

What does it mean when you notice that your folders and documents are 
not snapping to grid AND then your resolution changes, all at about the 
same time?  After this happened, I repaired permissions and returned 
the two items to their original state, but I don't know if that's what 
I needed to do.  Incidentally, I don't think I've repaired permissions 
within the last few years - just not one of those things I remember to 
do.  But then, with OS 7 & 9, I never did rebuild the desktop, either.
