Before I took the plunge to X, I'd seen some discussion on this list
about the hard drive running out of room, but didn't retain the info
that was shared. Now that I have been running Panther for a month or
two, (10.3.4) I got my first "start up disk is full" warning today.
I've spent the whole day searching forums and I can't find anything that
might help explain why. What can I move to another partition? My whole
user folder, or just the Library, or Documents?
I believe that you can offload the whole User folder (with an alias in the "correct" place), but what you really want to do is use this opportunity to organise and offload the cruft. For example, my boot drive has my whole OS X and apps, User folder and Library, along with the projects I'm working on in one partition, and ALL the other stuff on another partition. Works well and I'm in little danger of filling up my boot drive.
If for some reason re-organising and offloading cruft doesn't solve your problem or is impractical, you really need to be looking at a much larger hard drive as a replacement for your current HD. I'd suggest "swapping" a new HD in and putting your original into a FW case you can boot from, then cloning the old one to the new one.
