Yesterday morning, I woke my computer and went online to check email and such. To my surprise, OS X mail app did not connect. I tried my browser and nothing (I use Safari). If I waited a LONG time, I could get part of a web page to load but not much. I recently changed from Adelphia Cable modem to Bellsouth DSL Extreme as they promised 3 mb/sec down and 384 k up for less than I was paying Adelphia for the same.
I called them when I got home from work last night and after the usual extended hold time I spoke with a tech support person who told me to try Internet Explorer. I had to search to find it but I did find it. Strangely enough it worked fine. The tech person told me that OS X 10.3 was the problem as well as Safari and the OS X mail app. I did tell this person that the symptoms were the same on all of my Macs running OS X and he further told me that if I wanted to use BellSouth DSL, I would need to use Internet Explorer and a Microsoft based Email app. Oddly enough, my wife uses Entourage on her Mac and it didn't work either.
I've only had Bellsouth DSL for about 2 weeks and up until yesterday, everything worked fine. But then there was an outage in my area at about 4 am on 7/21/04. The tech person told me that there had been a few complaints from some Mac users since then regarding connectivity.
I called Apple Tech support and told them what the Bellsouth person had said. Apple Tech said that it was highly unlikely that given the same symptoms on both Macs running OS X that it was the OS's fault.
My plan: call Bellsouth today and have them cancel service and refund my money for the equipment that they required me to buy. Also, I called Adelphia and have scheduled re-installation for tomorrow.
Opinions?
I'll be back on the list with my Adelphia account on Friday, so I'll catch up on replies.
