I have two iMacs: a rev. D 333 MHz tray-loader running OS 9.2.2, and a
slot-loader with built-in CD-RW drive (the "Summer 2001" model) running
OS X 10.3.4. They are located in different parts of my home, and only
the slot-loader is connected to the Internet. Occasionally I need to
transfer files from the slot-loader to the tray-loader, such as
application updates downloaded from the Internet, etc. You'd think
transferring files would be as simple as burning a CD on the slot-loader
and then placing that CD in the tray-loader. It's not that simple,
though; I have always had an awful time getting the tray-loader to
accept CDs burned on the slot-loader. I have tried different brands of
blank CDs (Maxell, Sony, Imation); I have tried using CD-Rs instead of
CD-RWs; I have tried using the "Mac Only" setting in Toast. The
tray-loader either rejects the CD entirely ("This disk is
unreadable...") or the drive thrashes and thrashes when it is trying to
mount the CD. "Regular" CD-ROMs work fine. The same CD-Rs work perfectly
on the slot-loading iMac, and Disk Utility reports they are OK. I almost
always end up having to tote my Imation SuperDisk drive back and forth
between the 2 Macs in order to transfer files. :-((Emily -- "If it seem slow, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay."
