I installed OS X 10.2.8 on my Rev. D 333 (Grape!) last year. My mom gave me Jaguar for my b-day.

With all my apps, files, etc. the new OS took up pretty much the rest of my 6 gig hard disk. I couldn't work on large sound files, which is what I like to do. Couldn't save Wav/Aiff files etc. Even had to burn off and delete my nice mp3 collection!

After a week or so, I became so frustrated I went ahead and uninstalled Jaguar. Sob! It just wasn't worth it to have to keep deleting stuff out, and still keep running out of room. I knew I needed a new hard drive. (BTW -- UNinstalling OS X involves finding everything OS X in the iMac, and throwing it away. At least my install CD didn't come with an uninstall feature. I searched the web like crazy trying to figure out how to get Jaguar off my computer!)

My wife got me a nice 120 gig hard drive for Xmas, and it works GREAT. I'm happily running Jaguar now, and when I want that old-time Mac experience I can just restart in OS 9.1. I have some favorites back there, MacMame being one of them. Most of my other apps I've updated to X by now.

Anyway, if your CD drive is shot you can get a NICE CD-burner that fits in the old iMac for like $160. Not bad at all. I want one. I think it burns at 8x, too... better than the 2x which I think is all you can get over USB 1 that these machines have.

I'm still very, very happy with my 1999-era Mac. I'm proud to own it, and to be using it to it's full capability (well, as far as my technical proficiency goes, anyway!) -- I even configured my built-in Apache server (it comes with Jaguar) and am serving dozens of sound files off my 3rd, 100 gig partition. I can server over 80 gigs if I want to -- just think how much that would cost using a service to do it. Of course, my websites don't generate much traffic.

Anyway, the gist is, go for a bigger hard drive, and if your CD-ROM is shot, think about the CD-burner (it has to be built-in as you know, the iMac won't boot off an external drive) -- that burner is the next thing I want.

Good luck,

Eddie

No problem, Chris. I'm far from an expert. For mine, I've just used an ordinary CD cleaner I bought at Odd Lots for $3.99. All you need is something that will clean the lens. Mine has little brushes on it.

I have panther installed on my rev d imac and it went fine. Just a squeezed 6G hard drive, but other than that, fine. I wonder if your CD tray needs cleaning?

I'll try that. Sorry if I sound like a total Mac idiot, but what's the best way to safely clean my CD tray? Dry cloth? 409? Compressed air?

Thanks,
