Any ideas how to locate my missing inbox messages?

How's your backup policy?

I've just replicated your action and as you say, the messages are not moved to the trash. I searched on the disk for all mailboxes and the one I deleted was not there. So it looks like there is no way of recovering it.

To get your Inbox working again, try disabling your account in Preferences->Accounts->Advanced, saving the change and then re-enabling it.

Good luck.
