Just picked up my first USB Mac... sorta.

Is there a way to determine if it's a revision C or D without cracking the
thing open? ie, via the serial number?) I haven't quite figured out how
to take it apart yet.
Its Family number is M4984
Serial number ends in "-A"
Copyright 1998

My wife's rev D says the same. However, hers also has a label in the well on the lower right where everything plugs in; the USB, ethernet, modem, etc. At the bottom of the label, beneath the Ethernet ID, is some very tiny print, the first part of which reads: 333/32/6G/CD... There's more, but the rev D does have a 333mHz processor, it came with 32mb RAM, a 6gb hard drive, and a CD-ROM. Yours may have a similar label.

How suitable are these for OSX?

Suitable enough, assuming you aren't expecting it to do anything processor-intensive quickly.

Firewire capable?

Nope, unless you're willing to shell out $380 for a Sonnet Harmoni processor card. At that point, you're almost halfway to a new eMac, and that's before adding RAM and a faster, larger hard drive.

Possible keyboard issues? I recall reading a long time ago something
about there being compatibility issues between the bondi and
fruit-coloured iMac keyboards.

Hmm, maybe. I hadn't heard about bondi/fruit compatibility issues, but I did try using a Macally (non-OEM) keyboard on it, which sent it into a loop whereby it continually rebooted. Really annoying! Thinking the keyboard was defective, I took it back and got another one, which did the same thing. I tried it with her 300mHz clamshell iBook, no problem, and am now using it with my 700mHz iBook without incident.

Hope this helps.
