The best place I've found for this type of info is here:

You can input all the variables -- type of drive, type of Mac, etc. etc. -- 
and it comes up with user reports in forums specific to what you're trying 
to do.

As a bonus, if you get your project to work, you can post your OWN adventure 
online!

What I would try to do, is search using the specific hard drive and iMac 
terms, and see if anyone else has had issues with what you're trying to do.

Keep us posted on jumper settings you've tried, etc... that does seem like 
the key factor in this case. It should boot up off the OS 9.2 CD with the 
"C" key held down.

I just picked up a "Flower Power" iMac 500 from a auction.  It had 
everything but a hard drive.  I installed a WD 40 GB HD and am trying to 
install OS 9.1 from a bootable CD.  For some reason, the computer doesn't 
seem to want to boot from the CD.  I have tried every pin combination on 
the HD that there is.  To be honest, I am not even sure if the CD drive is 
IDE or SCSI.  There is no power cable attached to it, and the cable that 
connects to it has 50 pins.  Is there a secret to getting one of these 
things to boot and install?
