Please help I am trying to help my daughter setup her new eMac. She is staying with friends whose home is networked (all using PC's), using a wired Linksys cable/DSl router and a Linksys Wirless router.
We are on DSL rather than cable. I don't know if configuration would be the same, but this is what we have that works for us:
In order, the chain coming out of line 1 goes like this:
1. the phone outlet
2. DSL filter (a tiny little filter apparently necessary when DSL shares a line with the phone?)
3. a DSL modem (was a modem/router, but the router part is not dependable, so our ISP explained to my son how to disable that feature)
4. a LinkSys switch
5. 2 PCs, an iMac, a Netgear router
6. (wirelessly:) a Powerbook
Coming out of the wall at line 2, I still have a phone line plugged into my iMac for faxes.
All four computers can surf simultaneously.
Our ISP said that if we have trouble, we'd need to assign IP addresses to each device, but they also said that most newer equipment will do that automatically. The reason for the possible IP addresses needing to be assigned is because sometimes when my sons game, the game's server sees them with the same IP, and they can't play the same game at the same time. Since they've done this, we are all happy happy happy.
