You use DHCP, but the modem/router may still use PPPoE to make the 
connection. Most ADSL these days is PPPoE. Fortunatly, most ISPs have 
also made this transparent to the user (wrapped the PPPoE client into the 
modem itself).

The fact that you do get disconnected when idle leans heavily to it being 
a PPPoE connection to the ISP.
