>happen to me etc...

I believed you. In fact, I had always thought that was the normal thing
ISPs did with ADSL connections using PPPoE. I was surprised how many
people said that it doesn't happen to them.

Heck there were even lawsuits in the early days of ADSL, because people
were complaining that they bought a service that was advertised as
"Always On", when in fact they actually get dropped when idle. Of course,
back then the PPPoE software sucked, so reconnecting didn't happen
automatically, and often had problems connecting entirely, so it was much
more important that once you were on, you stayed on, for fear you
wouldn't be able to reconnect (much like the days of AOL busy signals...
if you managed to get thru, you ran software to keep from being
disconnected)

I also wonder how many of these people that say it doesn't happen to
them, don't realize that it DOES happen to them. Some DSL modems/PPPoE
drivers will automatically log you back on as soon as activity is seen.
So they may in fact be getting logged off, and back on, and be totally
oblivious to it. The only thing that would indicate it is happening is
sometimes it might take an extra 2 seconds to make the first connection
to a web page.
