Actually there is a program out there to solve this particular problem. Check out hymn at http://hymn-project.org/
The purpose of hymn is to allow you to exercise your fair-use rights under copyright law. It allows you to free your iTunes Music Store (protected AAC / m4p) purchases from their DRM restrictions with no sound quality loss. These songs can then be played outside of the iTunes environment, even on operating systems not supported by iTunes. Compiled binaries for OS X, and Windoze. Of course source code is also available. Another helpful shareware program is Soundconverter. If you convert a different format to WAV then to whatever format you prefer you should only loose audio fidelity on the format you convert too, not when converting to WAV. On a side note. Looking for someone to donate a iPod for another project. Need one to experiment with getting a iPod to play ogg vorbis files.
