Thanks to everyone who responded, we got the CD out of my niece's Indigo iMac DV.
Of course, now it won't boot, just gets to the flashing question mark.

I'm just wondering whether it is the StartupDisk control panel that expects a different startup disk than the internal drive. Can you boot off a startup CD and try selecting the internal HD in the Startup Control Panel? Maybe it will reboot OK after that. Maybe not. Worth a shot maybe.
