I am in digest mode, so I can't follow you. Also, I know nothing about UNIX
command line stuff, guess I'd have to learn?
PREVENTING SPAM IF YOU'RE NOT A UNIX GEEK
There are a few steps you can take that will dramatically cut down on your spam without getting too terribly technical. It does nothing to report or punish spammers, just keeps them out of your inbox as much as possible.
1. Get a spam-aggressive ISP.
Lots of ISPs SAY they fight spam when in fact they are part of the problem. Ask around and find one that actually DOES try to stop spam. Earthlink is a good choice as far as national ISPs go, .Mac can help you in this regard too.
2. Use Apple's Mail, along with a third-party spamstopper like Junkmatcher or SpamSieve or Spamnix (the latter for Eudora only I believe). All have pretty good, trainable spam catchers.
3. Set up a "suspicious" or "possible junk" folder, along with some rules.
Setting a few simple rules will help reduce spam significantly. You can, for example, automatically send any email from China (.cn) to the trash, or block any email with more than two dollar signs, or trash anything with *either* the words Sexually *or* explicit in them, etc.
Just check this special folder every so often to make sure you're not catching too many "false positives" and adjust your rules accordingly. I run a special third-party set of Mail rules called "Spamholio" (heh) that seems to help.
4. Set up a free email address that you use ONLY for signing up for stuff. Give your REAL email address to only people you know. Then you can put the ultimate spamkiller in -- if the person is not in your Address Book, into the trash it goes!
5. Common sense. Don't use your real email address on a Usenet newsgroup. Don't use your real email address (unaltered) on your website. Don't use your real email address to sign up for dubious offers. Indeed, avoid dubious offers! :)
6. DON'T RESPOND TO SPAM. I can't stress this enough. Kill it, filter it, ignore it, but NEVER RESPOND.
Other suggestions (including geeky ones) are welcome.
