Ok, though the noise has stopped, I would like ideas as to what it was. I woke the iMac this morning and it kernel paniced...so i rebooted and all seemed fine for a bit until it made this loud (compared to its normal volume) whirring grinding noise, if anyone here has/had an Iomega Jaz drive, it sounded like the noise a Jaz drive makes when the disc spins. I thought it was the fan so i put it to sleep again and the noise went away, when after waking (no kernel panic this time) the noise started again so it could well be the fan. Mum suggested that it was 'warming up' though it is fairly cold today, it has been cold other days and never done this before.

Then it just got quieter and quieter shortly after went away completely to the normal fan noise, but i'm still a little concerned.
