I was looking into wireless routers and it seems even the 802.11b needs IE
5.5 to operate and the g's require IE 6.
Um, no. Dunno where you got this info, but it's a good example of the sort of incredibly poor and apocryphal information PC users routinely get.
First off, there is no such thing as IE 5.5 or 6 for Macs.
Secondly, wireless routers and cards do not require browsers at all to operate, though I suspect that what they meant is that you need a web browser to configure the router. Any modern, standards-compliant web browser will serve.
I strongly recommend the Aiport Base Station from Apple. No, it is not the cheapest thing on the market, but it has a combination of style and features that are hard to match from anyone else. Current models include a built-in phone modem as backup (very few wireless routers have this), a second LAN ethernet port for a wired computer, guaranteed compatibility with Appletalk printers and AOL (very hard to find both of these in a third-party router), a USB port for wireless printing (again, not the norm in most third-party routers) and of course Apple ease of setup. You're not paying extra for looks, you're paying extra for functionality. The Airport Extreme has other strengths (and weaknesses) which may open up new possibilities no other router can easily match, but that's another story for a different situation.Any other info such as make/models recommended would be appreciated.
That said, if you don't use any old printers and aren't on AOL, half the advantages of the Airport disappear and other wireless router may be what's right for you.
