That's the way most of us run OS X.
First of all, which version would be best to run on this, 10.2 or 10.3

10.3.x, definitely. More importantly, for best performance (since you 
don't have a lot of horsepower processor wise) will be LOTS OF RAM and 
a large, fast hard drive. I would suggest replacing the old hard drive 
with a faster (7200rpm), newer (8MB cache), larger (at least 40GB, your 
machine can handle up to 120GB drives) hard drive. I would suggest AT 
LEAST 512MB of RAM, more if possible.

Second, is it better to put 9 on a separate partition or both on the 
same?

"Better" is a relative term. Apple clearly things they should be on the 
same partition, and so do I unless you have a specific reason not to do 
that. Another option is to take your old hard drive (see above) and 
place it in a Firewire case (I'm assuming you have FW -- I sure hope 
so!) and put (leave) OS 9 just as it is on that drive and use it for 
Classic.

Can you actually boot from 9 if they are on the same partition?
