Seems I need to make the move to X but will also need classic on my
Graphite iMac DV 400mhz/640 ram/13gig hard drive.
First of all, which version would be best to run on this, 10.2 or 10.3 or
doesn't it matter?
Second, is it better to put 9 on a separate partition or both on the same?
Can you actually boot from 9 if they are on the same partition?
Thanks for answering this and all my other questions in the past.
Debra,
I have a Blueberry iMac DV400, 10GB hard drive, 1GB RAM. I had 9.2.2 on my iMac and added Jaguar (10.2), but stayed booted in 9 mostly because I was hearing scary stuff about 10.2. December 2003, I decided to add Panther and begin the migration. I backed up my HD to an external HD, then did a brand new "nuke-and-pave" install of 9.0.4 + upgrades up to 9.2.2, then installed Panther (10.3). My 10 GB hard drive is one partition. If an OS 9 app seemed buggy in Classic, I would reboot in 9. In fact, I spent more time booted in 9 than operating from Classic. As time went on, I spent more and more time in X. Yesterday was the first time in six months I've booted in 9, and that was to be able to read a five year old floppy that OS X thought had PC files. (OS X doesn't seem to be able to read floppies in my external floppy drive.)
One thing I would recommend if you decide to clean off your hard drive and start from scratch: When you back up your existing files, use Carbon Copy Cloner. My files backed up just fine, but my apps didn't back up "installed", if that makes any sense. When I would open an app for the first time after saving it to my external HD, it would begin the process of installing, asking for serial numbers, etc. Everyone on this list told me I should have backed up with Carbon Copy Cloner. I've since downloaded & bought it, but it was after the fact.
It was scary for me to make this change. Some people might not be able to identify with that, but it was. I'm a Mac fan, having owned Macs since 1993 and having collected a few extras along the way, but I'm not technical AT ALL. I tend to try to stay on the safe side of every OS and computer change. I was glad I waited for Panther. Now I've added a PowerBook (in July) to my collection, and I don't even have 9/Classic installed on it at all.
Hope that provided moral support! Claire
