That iMac's internal slot only accepts a normal Airport card, which is
wireless-B. Apple didn't start putting Airport Extreme, or wireless-G card
slots in the iMacs until the last of the flat panel G4s.

So, you could do wireless-B with an internal Airport card. This is good
because it doesn't clutter up your Mac with any additional external bits.

You could also do wireless-B with a USB adapter. This is good because you
don't even have to open the computer to install it, and many are USB powered
and just connect directly to the USB port, no wires or extra clutter on your
desk. Make sure the device comes with a driver for your OS before you buy.

To use a USB wireless-G adapter you would need USB 2.0, which your iMac does
not have.

The only way to get wireless-G speeds would be to use an Ethernet to
wireless adapter. This has the benefit of higher speed, and doesn't require
drivers, but means having another accessory wired to your Mac and taking up
room on your desk, and taking up a power outlet.
