Because it was said that the problem happened when it was
imported USING the AAC encoder. Trying a different encoder
is called "troubleshooting".

The "fault" physically lies with the actual CD-ROM as it is obviously damaged though I hadn't spotted it before sticking it in the drive.

The "problem" lies in that iTunes crashes/stalls as it cannot
fulfill the rip.

What I would like to have seen was a simple cancel function
where it would just eject the CD and abandon the operation.

Besides, why limit yourself to Apple's DRM version of AAC?
You can't even play Apple AAC encoded music on all
versions of iTunes

Erm, because I only run Panther on my iMac G4, AlBook and my MDD, oh and my 3G iPod AAC works just fine. :o)
