Hi Zippy,
I'm still using AW 6.2.8 and simply opened AW, dropped down from 'edit' to

Kathleen, in my copy of AW 6.2.9, you can't get the preferences from the "Edit" menu, you have to use the application's Menu, immediately to the right of the Blue Apple Menu.

Thanks to Jack Russell and Dennis Swaney for their input.

Something must be amiss, for when I tried the "General Preferences" tab, it
did NOT have a box to check for actual fonts for the font menu. I was using
AW 6.2.7, but upgraded to 6.2.9 today. But even after the upgrade I didn't
find the "actual fonts" as a choice when I went to general preferences.

No doubt the solution is something really simple. But it still eludes me.

Ok, Zippy, try this:

1. Launch AppleWorks but do not open any documents.
2. Click on the AppleWorks Menu that is located between the Blue Apple and File Menus.
3. Move your mouse down to the second entry which should be "Preferences" and has a right-pointing triangle. A sub-menu should open that contains three choices: General..., Button Bar..., and HTML Import/Export... Click on General...
4. Now you should have a window that near the top has a drop down menu labeled "Topic:" Make sure that the Topic says General
5. The window should have 3 box type areas: "At Startup, Show", "On (CMD symbol)-N, Create", and "Options. The first two should have drop-down menus, while the last one has only a check box labeled "Font Menu in Actual Fonts". Make certain that box is checked
6. Click OK, close AppleWorks, and then re-launch AppleWorks. Create a new word Processing document and then click on the "Text" menu, and then the "Font" selection. After a few seconds, your fonts should show up in style.
7. If the above doesn't work, you may have to re-install AppleWorks.
