>So I have two problems the first is price, this module is priced at $100. >I've seen memory for my iMac at about half that price at fastmac.com >The other is a rumor I've heard that allthough the older iMacs are >supposed to >top out at 256 mgs of RAM that in fact using the upper and lower slot you >can get >them up to >512. Is this true? If so is it the same type of RAM module, or two >different types?
There are mixed reports about the bondi iMac taking 512 total. What I found are two issues to watch for: 1. Make sure you get x64 ram which is what Apple says is required. That means the ram should be 32Mx64. Do not get the 32Mx8 style, it is a different chip density and the iMac may not see it all (I haven't personally tried the 32Mx8, but since there are reports of iMacs not taking a 256MB card, and seeing less then the full amount on the card, and not reading a higher density would manifest itself as not seeing the full amount... I drew a logic tie between the two) 2. Some iMac processor daughter cards have metal retaining tabs to hold the memory card in place. On a 256MB card, the chips are placed so close to the edges, those metal tabs can touch and short the pins on the chips. On mine, when this happened, I had random results ranging from failure to boot, to not seeing the memory card or not seeing all of the memory on the card, to working fine but being unstable. This issue was very easily fixed with just a small peice of electrical tape applied to the edge of the memory card to insulate the chip pins from the metal on the retaining clip. Following those two points above, I have successfully gotten two Rev A Bondi iMacs to take a full 512 MB of ram, and run very happily (albeit slightly slowly) with OS X.3.5 (one is actually running OS X.3.5 Server). As soon as I get another ATX power supply adaptor, I'll be sticking 512 MB in a 3rd Rev A that I have. -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
