Well, I am not Chas and I don't have OSX yet, but I don't like the idea! I had the same problem with a Windows computer and every time I had a problem I had to lose EVERYTHING and go WAY back to old versions of browsers and drivers. :o(Well actually the restore disks are all that should be needed for 99.999% of issue requiring a reinstall. However, being a charter member of the paranoid computing club, we do it one step further here. Every new Mac goes into service with a nice fresh external hard drive as an add on. Format the external HD with Apple's disk utility as you like. Once the system is up and running we use Carbon Copy Cloner ( http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html ) to make a complete clone of the virgin system. (check the box that says "make bootable") You always have a fresh, clean version to boot from with all your settings already loaded.
What can be done? Can OSX users make their own boot system or if you crash you have to lose it all? I realize there can be back ups, but still...
After that we'll use CCC once a week to update the back up to the current version using CCC's synchronization feature, so you only copy the newest material. As soon as the next OS X version appears and you buy that you'll have a set of retail disks. In the meantime the external HD has given you an easy means to restore in the event of problems. Since all the current Mac's support booting from an external firewire drive, you can get up and running again with minimal
delay. (In our case the time it takes to get the external drive out of the fire safe and hook it up. <G>)
If you consider you are spending serious dollars for the new Mac and extra $100.00 dollars, or so, for an external HD is cheap insurance. :-)
