Depending on the pitch, it could also be the flyback transformer that powers
the CRT. When it gets old, the shellac that holds the windings in place
loosens. Then it can short and/or burn out, ruing the av board. Not uncommon
in any older CRT device. When that happens, either you buy replacement
innards used, or you download your hard drive into a better machine (fixing
the problem is prohibitive compared to the cost of a similar or slightly
newer machine).
