Click the Apple Menu, Control Panel, TCP/IP then the option to obtain an IP address automatically via the built in ethernet.
And click on the Options button and *uncheck* load only when needed. That way the ip stack doesn't suddenly unload and leave you unable to re-obtain a valid DHCP lease.
And, if you're moving the cable modem from computer to computer, don't forget to power-cycle it. The modem will only talk to n devices, where n is determined by your cable company (typically 1, and you pay for more). To make it forget which MAC address (device/computer) it has seen, you must leave the modem unpowered for about 30 seconds.
