occasionally the [AppleWorks] database goes "wonky" and freezes
We see this also. Very annoying.
AppleWorks is particularly sensative to file corruptions. Some of the corruptions it seems to create on its own, as you add and delete records. AppleWorks seems to have little or no error checking built-in -- so it easily freezes or crashes (poor debugging on Apple's part).
Try creating a new database... two methods:
1) Save As. close the old one then open the new one.
2) Create a new template then import the old database into it.
Either should greatly improve stability.
