This may be a dumb question, but do they make a USB 2.0 to Firewire
converter?

No. They are incompatible.

I just paid $75 for this enclosure, and I would like to be
able to put it to use.

Well, most of the newer Macs (I think starting with the Mirrored Drive Door G4s) have USB 2.0 onboard -- just not your old machine. I think the rule of thumb is that if your new machine can boot into 9, it does NOT have USB 2.0.
