I am struggling with Dial-up,
Unless broadband is completely and totally unavailable to you, I urge you to look into it. It doesn't cost any more than a second phone line, and the uptick in speed/downtick in aggravation is nothing short of incredible. I'm sorry I don't have a specific answer to your dialup woes, but at some point you're going to have to ask yourself what your time is worth. This issue is only going to get worse over time.
Speaking of time, why not just buy Panther for $59 (see dealmac.com) and upgrade that way?*
*of course there is a huge, slow-to-download combo update waiting for you there as well ... :)
