I probably should know this, but how do I increase memory allocated to the OS?
The OS doesn't have a fixed memory allocation the way apps do [in OS 9]: it grabs more as and when needed. I don't know what the cause of your shutdowns is, but that's not the fix.
Judith is not running OS X, she's running OS 9 as she indicated in her post. One CAN allocate more RAM to the Finder in OS 9, but I agee with you that this is not the real problem. The problem is most likely that she's got something in her system that has a memory leak and is stealing RAM the longer it's left open. It's also possible that one of her RAM chips has gone bad.
