When it gives those errors it means something is wrong with your filesystem. If running First Aid from the OS cd A FEW TIMES, and trying fsck doesn't work, you may need a stronger 3rd party disk utillity.
I had similar problems using Yellow Dog Linux on my iMac and ended up having to reformat.
