What's wrong with Norton (other than the fact that you can no longer make your own bootable cd's with norton apps on it)?Norton has a long history of various issues with OS X. Lost data, random freezes, etc. It's occurred too many times to too many users to be just an aberration. It may be Norton tries to do too many different things, coding issues, or ??? It's way out of my league to decipher, but the problems are well documented on a lot of Apple related web sites.
The two utilities I find best with OS X are Disk Warrior 3.0.1 and Tech Tool Pro 4.0.2

I do have Norton installed on my mac, however, since i cant reboot with the norton cd (its got 10.1 on it, and it causes kernel panics when it tries to boot, so i have to boot into OS 9) would it be recommended to uninstall it? are most of the features of norton in techtool pro and diskwarrior?
